2014-05-17 Sun shines on Botanical Gardens

Our most successful ever Sungazing event with well over 200 people of all ages looking down our specialist solar telescopes.  They asked many questions and learned a lot about our nearest star.  We had a great time too and enjoyed the sunshine and ice cream immensely!

2014-04-12 Sungazing in the Botanical Gardens

Our first event in the Botanical Gardens for many years was a great success despite the cloudy weather. There were many interested visitors and a few actually saw a fleeting image of the Sun during some brief cloud breaks. By an amazing coincidence, the grandson of our founder, Reginald Cox, was visiting the city and

Many Messier objects were seen and a -7.5 magnitude Iridium flare rounded off a great evening.

Despite a heavy downpour and a small detour on the way to Jodrell Bank, the Sun shone while we were there and many of us watched the huge radio telescope rotate around on it’s railway tracks.  We were treated to a talk about the telescope and spent a lot in the shop!  Overall, a great

A group of us met on Burbage Moor around 22:00 to prepare for the picture which was a series of images taken between 22:27 and 22:42 BST by the Cassini spacecraft, from the orbit of Saturn. Earth was only about a pixel in size from Cassini’s vantage point 898 million (1.44 billion kilometers) away, but
